CryoComputing
by Jacob Brunson

Who? There were two students involved in this project. Mike Meeuwsen conducted most of the research and conducted the experiments. Jacob Brunson began the project with a little more knowledge about electronics and was able to coach Mike about a few thing. However, Jacob's main role has been, basically, this web site.

What? This project contains of three parts. A research component which involved learning about CryoComputing. An experimentation component which involved creating an active circuit and using it to test hypothesis. A publication component which involves sharing our knowledge; this web site.

Why? Every year the most elite science students at Glencoe High School in the BioChem class are required to conduct a research science project called the BioChem Project. This is a BIG deal and the whole project lasts more than two months for all the students. This web site was built to communicate what the young scientists have learned and discovered. Originally a MetaComputing (using more than one computer to do computing) topic was chosen, but the project would have been out of the capabilities of the budget, so the topic was changed to CryoComputing. Jacob and Mike chose to do a project about advanced computing research because they both have internships at Intel Corporation.

Mike Demonstrates his circuit
Mike, who is 18 and gave permission to publish this photo, demonstrates here his circuit and can of freeze spray outside of Jones Farm, Intel.

When?
Research was started before Christmas, as several topics were investigated. Research on CryoComputing was concluded January 25, 1999. Additional research was done during February, and experimentation took place during March. This web site was created the latter part of March.

Where?A few of the key locations to this project include the PSU library, Hillsboro Public Library, Glencoe High School, Mike's house, Jones Farm Intel and Ronler Acres Intel.

How? Experimentation was done with inverter and other components from Norvac Electronics. This web site was created with Macromedia Dreamweaver. Graphics on this web site were created in Corel Draw.

Goals. The objectives of this project included:

  • Demonstrate a complete understanding of current CryoComputing research. This was accomplished by reading and studying the latest scientific journals.

  • Collect real scientific data using the scientific process. Jacob and Mike built a circuit, cooled it, and measured timing results to meet this objective.

  • Present the findings as a web site. Jacob and Mike built this web site to communicate this information.
